Moon Images - March and April 2014
Standard Good +/- Best Favorite
The following images were taken in bright daylight with the sun at an altitude of about 50 degrees. I came up with the idea to test the cleaning results of the SC-plate. Due to the crystal clear morning sky and the Baader IR-Pass filter, the contrast at the lunar surface is still very good to produce these reference images. They impressively demonstrate what a good and clean optic with proper IR-filtering can do.

The used instrument was the Celestron C14 SCT at the Onjala Lodge/Namibia. The Camera was a SKYRIS 445Mono. The Raw-AVI-files (1200 frames) were taken on April 23rd 2014 from 8:30 to 9:30 UT with the Sun ~45 degree above the horizon. The first image right) shows volcanic domes near the crater Hortensius which are quite difficult to observe owing to their moderate height. Click here to view a large image.

The image shows the huge crater Copernicus and to teh right of it the volcanic domes Hortensius H1 to H6. The diameter of these domes is between 7.6 and 12.5 km and the diameter of the craters on the peaks i sbetween 1 to 2 km. The height of the domes is just 190 to 390 m.
The following images show more daylight images at the same day. From left to right: due to perfect libration conditions two difficult to observe large craters: Bailly and at the lunar limb Hausen, than Bullialdus, Lacus Tomoris and Hainzel, Kepler and Encke an two views of Copernicus
