Objektbeschreibung:

Der Hauptteil des hier abgebildeten Molekülwolkenkomplexes ist als der Reflexionsnebel IC 4592 katalogisiert. Ein zweiter Reflexionsnebel mit der Bezeichnung IC 4601 umgibt zwei Sterne rechts neben der Bildmitte. Die bräunliche Molekülwolke ist ein antives Sternentstehungsgebiet. Ein Mosaik der kompletten Antares Nebelregion zeigen wir hier.

Reflexionsnebel bestehen aus sehr feinem Staub, der normalerweise dunkel. Werden diese Staubwolken von nahe stehenden, energiereichen Sternen angestrahlt, leuchten sie hell auf. Der Nebel erscheint in blauem Licht, da seine feinen Staubteilchen blaues Licht effektiver reflektieren als den roten Spektralbereich. In diesem Fall stammt ein Großteil des reflektierten Lichts vom Stern Nu Scorpii, dem "Auge" des Pferdekopfes. IC 4592 wurde fotografisch am 23. Mai 1895 von Edward Barnard entdeckt.

Object description

The main part of the molecular cloud complex shown here is catalogued as the reflection nebula IC 4592. A second reflection nebula, designated IC 4601, surrounds two stars to the right of the centre of the image. The brownish molecular cloud is an ancient star-forming region. We show a mosaic of the complete Antares nebula region here

Reflection nebulae consist of very fine dust that is normally dark. When these dust clouds are illuminated by nearby energetic stars, they glow brightly. The nebula appears in blue light because its fine dust particles reflect blue light more effectively than the red part of the spectrum. In this case, much of the reflected light comes from the star Nu Scorpii, the "eye" of the horse's head. IC 4592 was discovered photographically by Edward Barnard on 23 May 1895.
