The nebula region around Antares in the constellation Scorpio
Über 3 Jahre nach der ersten Aufnahme ist unser Mosaik der Antaresregion abgeschlossen. Im Laufe der Zeit waren 2 Kameras und 2 Optiken für das Mosaik im Einsatz. Das Bildfeld zeigt den Bereich zwischen Antares, dem Hauptstern des Skorpions, und den Scherensternen. Hier treffen verschiedene Emissions- und Reflexionsnebel mit zwischen liegenden dunklen und kühlen Molekülwolken aufeinander und erzeugen eine der farbigsten Regionen am gesamten Himmel. Die Nebelregionen liegen etwa 100 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt. Antares steht mit etwa 400 Lichtjahren deutlich weiter entfernt.
Die Aufhellung am linken Bildrand wird durch den Planeten Jupiter erzeugt, der zur Aufnahmezeit dieses Mosaikteiles knapp außerhalb des Gesichtsfeldes stand.
Object description
Over 3 years after the first image was taken, our mosaic of the Antares region is now complete. In the course of time, 2 cameras and 2 optics were used for the mosaic. The image field shows the region between Antares, the main star of Scorpio, and the scissor stars. Here, various emission and reflection nebulae meet with intervening dark and cool molecular clouds, creating one of the most colourful regions in the entire sky. The nebular regions lie about 100 light years from the solar system. Antares is much further away at about 400 light years.
The brightening at the left edge of the image is produced by the planet Jupiter, which was just outside the field of view at the time this part of the mosaic was taken.
