Objektbeschreibung:

Der Orion-Molekülwolkenkomplex - unser Bild zeigt ein Mosaik aus 2 Segmenten eines Teils des Orion-Molekülwolkenkomplex. Es ist ein gewaltiger Komplex aus Sternentstehungsregionen und etwa zwischen 1.000 und 1.500 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt und mehrere hundert Lichtjahre groß. Seine Gesamtmasse wird auf etwa 300.000 Sonnenmassen geschätzt.

Im nördlichen Teil des Bildes (oben) liegen die H-II Region IC 443 mit der markanten Dunkelwolke Barnard 33, dem "Pferdekopfnebel". Nördlich davon steht der helle Gürtelstern des Sternbild Orion Alnitak mit dem asozierten Nebelkomplex NGC 2024. Im südlichen Teil des Bildes liegt der große Orionnebel M42/M43, eingebettet in einen Teil der großen Molekülwolke.

Object description

The Orion Molecular Cloud Complex - our image shows a mosaic composed of two segments of a portion of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. It is a massive complex of star-forming regions, located approximately 1,000 to 1,500 light-years from the solar system and spanning several hundred light-years. Its total mass is estimated at about 300,000 solar masses.

In the northern part of the image (top) lies the H-II region IC 443, featuring the striking dark cloud Barnard 33, the "Horsehead Nebula." To the north of it lies Alnitak, the bright belt star of the constellation Orion, along with the associated nebula complex NGC 2024. In the southern part of the image lies the Great Orion Nebula M42/M43, embedded in a portion of the large molecular cloud.
