A wide-field view of the area around Messier 78
Messier 78 - Eingebettet in eine große Molekülwolke LDN 1624 liegt der blaue Reflexionsnebel Messier 78. Unsere Widefielansicht zeigt ihn nahezu in Bildmitte. Er ist etwa 1.600 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt und ist Teil eines Sternentstehungsgebiet. Östlich im Bild zieht sich ein Teil der H-II Region, bekannt auch als Barnards Loop, diagonal durch das Bild. Er ist ebenfalls etwa 1.500 Lichtjahre entfernt. Westlich von M 78 liegt inmitten Barnards Loop der offene Sternhaufen NGC 2112, der mit einer Entfernung von 3.000 Lichtjahren deutlich hinter der H-II Region liegt.
Direkt südlich von M 78 liegen, eingebettet in eine kleine dichte Dunkelwolke, die beiden Herbig Haro Objekte HH 19 und HH 24. Sternentstehung par Exelance. Der Nebel nördlich von M 78 ist als NGC 2071 katalogisiert. Ein hoch aufgelöstes Bild vom M 78 und den Herbig Haro Objekten zeigen wir hier.

Object
description Messier 78 - Embedded in the large molecular cloud LDN 1624 lies the blue reflection nebula Messier 78. Our wide-field view shows it near the center of the image. It is about 1,600 light-years away from the solar system and is part of a star-forming region. To the east in the image, a portion of the H-II region—also known as Barnard’s Loop—stretches diagonally across the frame. It, too, is about 1,500 light-years away. West of M 78, nestled within Barnard’s Loop, lies the open star cluster NGC 2112, which, at a distance of 3,000 light-years, lies well behind the H-II region. Directly south of M 78, embedded in a small, dense dark cloud, lie the two Herbi Haro objects HH 19 and HH 24. Star formation at its finest. The nebula north of M 78 is cataloged as NGC 2071.
