IC 2948 und die Thackeray Globulen - unser Bild zeigt die Region IC 2948 und IC 2944 - populär auch als "rennendes Hühnchen (runnig chicken) bezeichnet. Bei den Katalognummern gibt es oft Verwirrung. IC 2948 ist der offene Sternhaufen im Zentrum des Bildes, die ihn umgehende H-II Region ist IC 2944. Im Zentralbereich des Sternhaufens liegen die so genannten Thackeray Globulen. Die Region liegt etwa 6.500 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt.
Object description
IC 2948 and the Thackeray Globules - our image shows the regions IC 2948 and IC 2944-also popularly known as the "Running Chicken." There is often confusion regarding the catalog numbers. IC 2948 is the open star cluster in the center of the image; the H-II region surrounding it is IC 2944. The so-called Thackeray globules are located in the central region of the star cluster. The region is about 6,500 light-years away from the solar system.

Thackeray Globulen in einer 100% Darstellung. Diese Art von kleinen Dunkelnebeln in Sternentstehungsgebieten wurden erstmals 1947 von dem amerikanisch-niederländischen Astronomen Bart Bok untersucht, es sind räumlich eng begrenzte Teile von Molekülwolken, in denen Sternentstehung stattfindet. The image on the left shows a detail of the open star cluster IC 2948 and the Thackeray Globule in a 100% view.
