The Virgo Galaxy Cluster
unser Bild zeigt eine Übersichtsaufnahme des Virgo Super Galaxienhaufens mit einem Feldgröße von etwa 3,65 x 5,5 Grad. Der Abbildungsmaßstab des Bildes liegt bei 6 Bogensekunden/Pixel.
Der Virgohaufen ist etwa 55 Millionen Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt und hat eine Ausdehnung von ungefähr 15 Millionen Lichtjahre. Er enthält geschätzt zwischen 1500 bis zu 2000 Galaxien, darunter einige sehr interessante wechselwirkende, verschmelzenden Galaxienpaare. Unsere Milchstraße, der Andromedanebel und weitere Mitglieder der lokalen Gruppe von Galaxien liegen am äußeren Rand des Virgohafens.
Etwa in Bildmitte liegt eine Galaxienkette, die auch "Markarjansche" Kette genannt wird. Benannt. Sie ist nach dem Astrophysiker Benjamin Markarjan, der die Galaxien in den 1970er Jahren intensiv beobachtet hatte. Sie beginnt mit den beiden elliptischen Riesengalaxien Messier 84 und Messier 86 (siehe dazu auch das beschriftete Bild weiter unten) und endet in einem Bogen nach Norden mit NGC 4477. Die kleine, unscheinbare Galaxie NGC 4425 bei den Koordinaten RA 12h 27m 00s und DE 12 43 00 gilt als geometrisches Zentrum des Virgohaufens. Object description
Our image shows an overview of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster with a field of view of approximately 3.65 x 5.5 degrees. The image scale is 6 arc seconds/pixel.
The Virgo cluster is about 55 million light-years away from the solar system and has an extent of about 15 million light-years. It contains an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 galaxies, including some very interesting interacting, merging galaxy pairs. Our Milky Way, the Andromeda Nebula, and other members of the local group of galaxies lie at the outer edge of the Virgo Cluster.

Approximately in the center of
our image is a chain of galaxies called the Markarian
Chain. It is named after the astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian, who
observed it intensively in the 1970s. It begins with the two giant elliptical
galaxies Messier 84 and Messier 86 (see also the
labeled image below) and ends in an arc to the north with NGC 4477. The small, inconspicuous galaxy
NGC 4425 at coordinates RA 12h 27m 00s and DE 12
43 00 is considered the center of the Virgo Cluster. We show a more detailed
