Objektbeschreibung:

Messier 96 - ist ein weiteres Beispiel für eine Balken Spiralgalaxie im Sternbild Löwe. Sie wird in der Hubble Sequenz morphologisch als Typ SAB(rs)ab klassifiziert. Sie ist etwas über 30 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt und besitzt eine ähnliche Größe und Masse wie diese. Zudem besitzt M96 einen aktiven Galaxienkern.

Das rötliche Detail im Spiralarm auf der linken Seite des Galaxienkerns ist übrigens keine H-II Region, sondern eine weit entfernte Spindelgalaxie im Hintergrund, ähnlich NGC 891. Die Entdeckung von Messier 96 gelang am 20. März 1781 dem Astronomen Pierre Méchain.

Object description

Messier 96 - is another example of a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Leo. It is classified morphologically as type SAB(rs)ab in the Hubble sequence. It is located just over 30 million light-years from the Milky Way and has a similar size and mass. M96 also has an active galactic nucleus.

Incidentally, the reddish detail in the spiral arm on the left side of the galactic core is not an H-II region, but a distant spindle galaxy in the background, similar to NGC 891. Messier 96 was discovered on March 20, 1781, by astronomer Pierre Méchain.
