Messier 90 - a bright barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo
Messier 90 - ist eine wunderschöne Balken Spiralgalaxie und wird nach dem Hubble-Typ als Sab klassifiziert. Die Galaxie ist ein Mitglied des Virgo-Galaxienhaufen und vermutlich an die irreguläre Galaxie IC 3583 gravitativ gekoppelt und zusammen als ARP 76 katalogisiert. Halton Arp gliederte seinen Katalog ungewöhnlicher Galaxien nach rein morphologischen Kriterien in Gruppen. Den ARP Katalog können Sie hier online abrufen.
Das Galaxienpaar ist etwa 50 Millionen Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt. Die auffälligen gelblichen punktförmigen Objekte im Bild auf der rechten Seite sind weit entfernte Galaxien und gehören zum Galaxienhaufen Zwicky 5274. Messier 90 wurde am 18. März 1781 von dem französischen Astronomen Charles Messier entdeckt.
Object description
Messier 90 - is a beautiful barred spiral galaxy and is classified as Sab according to the Hubble type. The galaxy is a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster and is believed to be gravitationally bound to the irregular galaxy IC 3583, together catalogued as ARP 76. Halton Arp divided his catalogue of unusual galaxies into groups based on purely morphological criteria. You can view the ARP catalog online here.
The pair of galaxies is about 50 million light-years away from the solar system. The striking yellowish dot-like objects in the image on the right are distant galaxies belonging to the Zwicky 5274 galaxy cluster. Messier 90 was discovered on March 18, 1781, by French astronomer Charles Messier.
