Messier 100 and the Holm 387 galaxy group in a wide-field view
Messier 100 - ist eine aktive Balken-Spiralgalaxie mit ausgedehnten Sternentstehungsgebieten vom Hubble-Typ SBbc im Sternbild Haar der Berenike. Unter der Katalogbezeichnung VCC 596 wird sie als Mitglied des Virgo-Galaxienhaufens aufgeführt und liegt in dessen äußersten nördlichen Teil. Wie fast alle helleren Spiralgalaxien befindet sich M 100 also weit vom dicht besiedelten Zentrum des Galaxienhaufens entfernt. Messier 100 ist etwa 55 Millionen Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt. Messier 100 ist zudem die Hauptgalaxie der kleinen Untergruppe Holm 387 innerhalb des Virgo-Haufens, zu dem ausschließlich Zwerggalaxien gehören.
Auffällig sind die vielen gelblichen, punktförmigen Objekte im nördlich Bildfeld unserer Aufnahme (siehe auch das Zusatzbild weiter unten). Dies sind alles Galaxien in Galaxienhaufen katalogisiert als Zwicky 5137, 5113 und 5055. Sie sind einige hundert Millionen Lichtjahre von unserer Galaxie entfernt und kein Teil des Virgo Galaxienhaufens. Ein Bild in hoher Auflösung von Messier 100 zeigen wirhier. Object description
Messier 100 - is an active barred spiral galaxy with extensive star-forming regions of Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Coma Berenices. Under the catalog designation VCC 596, it is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster and is located in its northernmost part. Like almost all brighter spiral galaxies, M 100 is located far from the densely populated center of the galaxy cluster. Messier 100 is about 55 million light-years away from the solar system. Messier 100 is also the main galaxy of the small subgroup Holm 387 within the Virgo cluster, which consists exclusively of dwarf galaxies.
The many yellowish, point-like objects in the northern field of view of our image are remarkable (see also the additional image below). These are all galaxies in galaxy clusters cataloged as Zwicky 5137, 5113, and 5055. They are several hundred million light-years away from our galaxy and are not part of the Virgo galaxy cluster.
