Objektbeschreibung:

NGC 5189 - hat für einen planetarischen Nebel eine außergewöhnliche Form mit tentakelartigen Nebelfetzen, die das Ganze regelrecht "verwickelt" - ähnlich eines Rasensprengers - aussehen lassen. Parallel dazu zeigt das Objekt jedoch auch Strukturen, die einem überlagerten, seitlich gekippten "S" ähneln. Das wäre dann ein Hinweis auf einen enthaltenen Doppelstern im Kernbereich, dessen Bewegungsablauf eine symmetrische Figur im Nebel erzeugt. Bisher wurde aber - auch nicht mit dem Hubble Space Telescope - keinerlei Komponente beim Zentralstern aufgespürt.

Die Entfernung zu NGC 5189 beträgt 4.800 Lichjahre und sein wahrer Durchmesser liegt bei 4.3 Lichtjahren. Das entspricht ziemlich genau dem Abstand Sonne zu alpha Centauri. Das Objekt wurde am 1. Juli 1826 von James Dunlop entdeckt.

Object description

NGC 5189 - has an unusual shape for a planetary nebula, with tentacle-like wisps of nebulosity that make the whole thing look downright "tangled" - similar to a lawn sprinkler. At the same time, however, the object also shows structures that resemble a superimposed, laterally tilted "S". This would then be an indication of a contained double star in the core area, the motion of which creates a symmetrical figure in the nebula. So far, however, no component has been detected near the central star - not even with the Hubble Space Telescope.

The distance to NGC 5189 is 4,800 light years and its true diameter is 4.3 light years. This corresponds almost exactly to the distance from the Sun to alpha Centauri. The object was discovered by James Dunlop on July 1, 1826.
