NGC 1761, NGC 1763 and NGC 1796 - Star formation in the Large Magellanic Cloud
LHA 120-N 11 - Unser Bild zeigt den großen offenen Sternhaufen NGC 1761 in der großen Magellanschen Wolke (LMC). Er ist umgeben von den Sternentstehungsregionen NGC 1763 und NGC 1769. Die neblige Region ist etwa 165.000 Lichtjahre von uns entfernt und hat einen wahren Durchmesser von über 1.000 Lichtjahre. Nach dem Tarantelnebel (NGC 2070), der sich am anderen Ende des charakteristischen Balkens der LMC befindet, ist er die zweitgrößte Sternentstehungsregion innerhalb der LMC und hat einige der massereichsten Sterne hervorgebracht, die je beobachtet wurden. Die Bezeichnung N 11 stammt aus Einträgen im Katalog des amerikanischen Astronomen und Astronauten Karl Gordon Henize aus dem Jahr 1956. NGC 1761 wurde am 3. August 1826 von James Dunlop entdeckt. Object description
LHA 120-N 11 - Our image shows the large open star cluster NGC 1761 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). It is surrounded by the star-forming regions NGC 1763 and NGC 1769. The nebulous region is about 165,000 light years away from us and has a true diameter of over 1,000 light years.

After the Tarantula Nebula (NGC
2070), which is located at the other end of the characteristic bar of the LMC,
it is the second largest star-forming region within the LMC and has produced
some of the most massive stars ever observed. The designation N 11 comes from
entries in the catalog of the American astronomer and astronaut Karl Gordon
Henize from 1956. NGC 1761 was discovered by James Dunlop on August 3, 1826. An
