Messier 85 and NGC 4394 in the constellation Coma Berenice
Messier 85 und NGC 4394 - Unser Bild zeigt die elliptische Galaxie Messier 85 und ihren Begleiter, die Balkenspirale NGC 4394. Beide Galaxien haben eine identische Radialgeschwindigkeit und sind Mitglieder des Virgo Galaxienhaufens. Messier 85 ist etwa so groß wie unsere Milchstraße, NGC 4394 etwa halb so groß. Ihre Entfernung zum Sonnensystem beträgt etwa 55 Millionen Lichtjahre. Aufgrund der deutlich blauen Farbe ihrer Spiralarme ist es vermutlich eine so genannte "star burst" Galaxie, also eine Galaxie in der wesentlich mehr neue Sterne entstehen, als für eine Galaxie dieser Größe typisch ist.
Messier 85 wurde im Jahr 1781 von dem französischen Astronomen Pierre Méchain und NGC 4394 im Jahr 1784 von Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel entdeckt. Weiterhin zeigt das Bild westlich (rechts) von Messier 85 die Galaxie IC 3292 und südlich die Galaxie PGC 40 512.
Object description
Messier 85 and NGC 4394 - Our image shows the elliptical galaxy Messier 85 and its companion, the barred spiral NGC 4394. Both galaxies have an identical radial velocity and are members of the Virgo galaxy cluster. Messier 85 is about the size of our Milky Way, NGC 4394 about half the size. Their distance from the solar system is about 55 million light years. Due to the distinct blue color of its spiral arms, it is probably a so-called "star burst" galaxy, i.e. a galaxy in which considerably more new stars are being formed than is typical for a galaxy of this size.
Messier 85 was discovered in 1781 by the French astronomer Pierre Méchain and NGC 4394 in 1784 by Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel. The image also shows the galaxy IC 3292 to the west (right) of Messier 85 and the galaxy PGC 40 512 to the south.
