IC 2177 - the head of the seagull in the constellation Monoceros
IC 2177 - auch als GUM 1, LBN 1027 und Sh 2-292 katalogisiert - ist das Zentrum einer großen H-II Sternentstehungsregion, die mit blauen Reflexionsnebeln vermischt ist. Der Nebelkomplex wird von dem jungen Be Stern HD 53 367 zum Leuchten angeregt. Es ist ein Doppelsternsystem bestehend aus HD 53 367, der 20-mal so massereich wie unsere Sonne ist und einem kleineren Begleiter mit 5 etwa Sonnenmassen, der den Hauptstern auf einer stark elliptischen Umlaufbahn umkreist.
Der Kopf der Möve hat einen Durchmesser von 20 Lichtjahre und ist ungefähr 3.600 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt. Die gesamte Region des Möwennebels wird der Canis Majoris OB1 Assoziation (CMa OB1) zugeordnet. Am rechten unteren Bildrand zeigt sich eine lichtschwache, kreisrunde rötliche Scheibe. Es ist vermutlich ein planetarischer Nebel mit der Katalognummer PK 223-2.1. Eine Weitwinkelansicht der Region zeigen wir hier und eine detaillierte Ansicht des kompletten Möwennebels hier.
Object description
IC 2177 - also listed as GUM 1, LBN 1027 and Sh 2-292, is the center of a large H-II star-forming region mixed with blue reflection nebulae. The nebular complex is powered by the young Be star HD 53 367. It is a double star system consisting of HD 53 367, which is 20 times as massive as our Sun, and a smaller companion with 5 solar masses or so, which orbits the main star in a highly elliptical orbit.

The head of the Seagull has a
diameter of 20 light years and is about 3,600 light years away from the solar
system. The entire region of the Seagull Nebula is assigned to the
Canis Majoris OB1 association (CMa OB1). A faint,
circular reddish disk can be seen at the lower right edge of the image. It is
probably a planetary nebula with the catalog number PK
