The Circinus Galaxy PGC 50779 in the constellation Circinus
PGC 50779 - Die Circinus Galaxie PGC 50779 ist eine aktive Seyfert Galaxie vom Hubble Typ Sb mit einem sehr hellen Kerngebiet und ausgeprägten Dunkelgebieten. Als Seyfertgalaxien werden Spiral- oder irreguläre Galaxien mit einem sehr hellen Galaxienkern definiert, was auf ein aktives schwarzes Loch im Kernbereich deutet. Sie wurden nach dem Astronomen Carl Keenan Seyfert benannt, der sich in den 1940er Jahren sehr intensiv mit solchen Galaxien beschäftigte.
Die Galaxie enthält große Mengen an turbulentem Gas, das in zwei Ringen um das Zentrum konzentriert ist. Der äußere Ring ist etwa 700 Lichtjahre vom Zentrum der Galaxie entfernt und zeigt starke Sternentstehung. Der innere Ring weist einen Radius von etwa 130 Lichtjahren auf.
Sie befindet sich nur rund 4 Grad vom galaktischen Äquator entfernt und erscheint durch den davor liegenden Staub in unserer Galaxie in einem gelblichen Licht. Sie hat einen wahren Durchmesser von etwa 40.000 Lichtjahren und ihre Entfernung zum Sonnensystem liegt bei etwa 13 Millionen Lichtjahren. Obwohl es sich um eine relativ nahe gelegene Galaxie handelt, wurde sie erst in den 1970er-Jahren entdeckt.
Object description
PGC 50779 - The Circinus galaxy PGC 50779 is an active Seyfert galaxy of Hubble type Sb with a very bright core region and prominent dark regions. Seyfert galaxies are defined as spiral or irregular galaxies with a very bright galaxy core, which indicates an active black hole in the core region. They were named after the astronomer Carl Keenan Seyfert, who worked intensively on such galaxies in the 1940s.

The galaxy contains large quantities of turbulent gas, which is
concentrated in two rings around the center. The outer ring is about 700 light
years away from the center of the galaxy and shows strong star formation. The
inner ring has a radius of about 130 light-years. It is located only about 4
degrees from the galactic equator and appears in a yellowish light due to the
dust in front of it in our galaxy. It has a true diameter of about 40,000 light-years and its distance from the solar system is about 13 million light-years.
