Objektbeschreibung:

NGC 4565 - NGC 4565 ist eine der schönsten "edge on" Galaxien und steht im Sternbild Coma Berenice. Der Begriff "edge on" besagt, dass man von der Erde direkt senkrecht auf die Rotationsachse der Galaxie schaut und so das zentrale Staubband zur Geltung kommt. NGC 4565 ist eine der hellsten Galaxien des Coma Galaxien Haufens. Entdeckt wurde NGC 4565 am 6. April 1785 von Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel.

Ihr wahrer Durchmesser beträgt etwa 100.000 Lichtjahre und die Entfernung zum Sonnensystem liegt bei knapp 60 Millionen Lichtjahre. Unser Bild zeigt zusätzlich NGC 4562 (rechts unten im Bild) und IC 3571 oberhalb des Zentrums von NGC 4565. Links unten in der Aufnahme bilden sich die hellsten Galaxien der Galaxiengruppe Zwicky 5304 ab.

Schaut man sich die Morphologie der Galaxie etwa genauer an, so fällt auf dass die Scheibe der leicht "verbogen" ist. Aus Beobachtungen mit dem Hubble Weltraumteleskop konnte das Alter der Sterne, die diesen Biegungen folgen, bestimmt werden. Sie sind mit 600 Millionen Jahren sehr jung, zudem hat dort vor etwa 300 Millionen Jahren eine erhöhte Sternentstehungsrate stattgefunden. Ursache könnte eine gravitative Wechselwirkung mit einer zu dieser Zeit vorbeiziehenden Galaxie gewesen sein. Radioastronomische Beobachtungen deuteten auf eine Interaktion mit der Galaxie IC 3571 hin.

Object description

NGC 4565 - NGC 4565 is one of the most beautiful "edge on" galaxies and is located in the constellation Coma Berenice. The term "edge on" means that you are looking directly perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the galaxy from Earth, so that the central dust band comes into its own. NGC 4565 is one of the brightest galaxies in the Coma galaxy cluster. NGC 4565 was discovered by Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel on April 6, 1785

Its true diameter is around 100,000 light years and the distance to the solar system is just under 60 million light years. Our image also shows NGC 4562 (bottom right of the image) and IC 3571 above the center of NGC 4565. The brightest galaxies of the Zwicky 5304 galaxy group are shown at the bottom left of the image.

If you take a closer look at the morphology of the galaxy, you will notice that the disk is slightly "bent". Observations with the Hubble Space Telescope made it possible to determine the age of the stars that follow these bends. At 600 million years old, they are very young, and an increased rate of star formation took place there around 300 million years ago. This could have been caused by a gravitational interaction with a galaxy passing by at that time. Radio astronomical observations indicated an interaction with the galaxy IC 3571.
