NGC 4559 - a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenice
NGC 4559 - ist eine Balken-Spiralgalaxie mit ausgedehnten Sternentstehungsgebieten vom Hubble-Typ SBcd im Sternbild Coma Berenice (Haar der Berenike). Sie ist ungefähr 35 Millionen Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt und hat einen wahren Durchmesser von etwa 115.000 Lichtjahre. Das Objekt wurde am 11. April 1785 von Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel entdeckt.
Max Wolf beobachtete im März 1903 mehrere kleinere H-II-Regionen und Sternassoziationen in der Galaxie NGC 4559, die mit eigenen Nummern im Index-Katalog verzeichnet worden sind. Es sind IC 3550, 3551, 3552, 3555, 3563 und IC 3564.
Object description:
NGC 4559 - is a barred spiral galaxy with extensive star-forming regions of the Hubble type SBcd in the constellation Coma Berenice (Hair of Berenice). It is about 35 million light years away from the solar system and has a true diameter of about 115,000 light years. The object was discovered by Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel on April 11, 1785.
In March 1903, Max Wolf observed several smaller H-II regions and stellar associations in the galaxy NGC 4559, which were listed with their own numbers in the index catalog. They are IC 3550, 3551, 3552, 3555, 3563 and IC 3564.
