NGC 2997 - a "grand design" galaxy in the constellation Antila
NGC 2997 - Unser Bild zeigt in höherer Bildauflösung die relativ selten fotografierte Galaxie NGC 2997 im Sternbild Antila (Luftpumpe). Sie gehört zu den Balkenspiralen und wird nach Hubble dem Typ SBc zugeordnet. Wie auch Messier 83 gehört sie zu den so genannten "face on Galaxien (grand design)", das bedeutet das man aus Sicht der Erde nahezu senkrecht auf die Rotationsachse schaut. Mit einer Entfernung von etwa 40 Millionen Lichtjahren ist sie allerdings mehr als doppelt so weit vom Sonnensystem entfernt als M 83. Ihr wahrer Durchmesser beträgt etwa 100.000 Lichtjahre. Deutlich auf unserem Bild sind beiden zentral beginnenden Staubbänder, die sich gut vom hellen Kerngebiet abheben. In den beiden Spiralarmen liegen viele rote H-II Emissionsgebiete.
NGC 2997 ist Zentrum einer kleinern Galaxiengruppe mit der Katalognummer LGG 180 (Lyons Groups of Galaxies) zu der 10 kleinere Galaxien gehören, die in gleicher Entfernung wie 2997 stehen. Die Galaxie wurde am 4. März 1793 von Friedrich Willhelm Herschel entdeckt.
Object description
NGC 2997 - Our image shows in higher image resolution the relatively rarely photographed galaxy NGC 2997 in the constellation Antila (Air Pump). It belongs to the barred spirals and is assigned to the type SBc according to Hubble. Like Messier 83 it belongs to the so called "face on galaxies (grand design)", which means that you look nearly perpendicular to the rotation axis from the view of the earth. With a distance of about 40 million light years it is more than twice as far away from the solar system as M 83. Its true diameter is about 100,000 light years. Clearly visible in our image are the two central dust bands, which stand out well from the bright core. In the two spiral arms are many red H-II emission regions.

NGC 2997 is center of a smaller galaxy group with the catalog number
LGG 180 (Lyons Groups of Galaxies) to which 10
smaller galaxies belong, which are in the same distance as 2997. The galaxy was
discovered by Friedrich Willhelm Herschel on March 4,
