LDN 43 and vdB 109 - Das Bild zeigt eine staubige Region mit dunklen Molekühlwolken im Sternbild Ophiuchus. Rechts oberhalb der Bildmitte steht der spindelförmige LDN 43. Im Innern stehen 2 kleine helle Nebel, katalogisiert als GN 16.31.3 und GN 16.31.7. Beide Objekte werden mit Protosternen in Verbindung gebracht. Auf hoch aufgelösten Bildern (Astronomy Picture of the day) ähnelt das Objekt erstaunlich einer fliegenden kosmischen Fledermaus, deshalb trägt das Objekt auch den populären Namen "Bat Nebel". In vielen Publikationen und Sternatlanten wird diese Region auch als hellerer und größerer Nebel mit der Katalogbezeichnung LBN 7 beschrieben, der jedoch offenbar nicht existiert.
Die Molekühlwolke ist etwa 1.400 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt und erstreckt sich über eine Länge von ungefähr 12 Lichtjahren. Links unten im Bild steht der Stern HD 150 416 in einer Entfernung von etwa 500 Lichtjahren zum Sonnensystem, der von dem schwachen Reflexionsnebel vdB 109 umgeben ist. Direkt darüber liegt die Dunkelwolke LDN 37. Zwei größere Mosaike dieser Region zeigen wir hier und hier.
Object description
LDN 43 and vdB 109 - The image shows a dusty region with dark molecular clouds in the constellation Ophiuchus. Right above the center of the image is the spindle-shaped LDN 43. Inside are 2 small bright nebulae, cataloged as GN 16.31.3 and GN 16.31.7. Both objects are associated with protostars. On high resolution images (Astronomy Picture of the day) the object resembles amazingly a flying cosmic bat, therefore the object has the popular name "Bat Nebula". In many publications and star atlases this region is also described as a brighter and larger nebula with the catalog designation LBN 7, but it apparently does not exist.
The molecular cloud is about 1,400 light-years from the solar system and extends over a length of about 12 light-years.At the lower left of the image is the star HD 150 416 at a distance of about 500 light-years from the solar system, surrounded by the faint reflection nebula vdB 109. Directly above it is the dark cloud LDN 37. We show two larger mosaics of this regionhere and here.
