GUM 10 and NGC 2546 - Star formation in the constellation Puppis
GUM 10 - Unser Bild zeigt ein 2-er Weitwinkelmosaik der relativ unbekannten Sternentstehungsregion GUM 10 im Sternbild Puppis (Achterdeck des Schiffs). Das Objekt wurde von dem australischen Astronomen Colin Stanley Gum entdeckt, der 1955 einen Katalog mit mehr als 80 ähnlichen diffusen Nebeln erstellte. Hoch aufgelöste Details von GUM 10 zeigt die ESO hier.
Das zweite Objekt in unserem Mosaik ist der große offene Sternhaufen NGC 2546. Er beinhaltet etwa 40 Sterne, wird nach Trumpler der Klasse III 2 zugeordnet und ist etwa 3.000 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt. Der Sternhaufen wurde im Jahr 1751 von Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille erstmalig erwähnt.

description GUM 10 - Our image shows a 2-frame wide-field mosaic of the relatively unknown star-forming region GUM 10 in the constellation Puppis (aft deck of the ship). The object was discovered by Australian astronomer Colin Stanley Gum, who compiled a catalog of more than 80 similar diffuse nebulae in 1955. High-resolution details of GUM 10 are shown by ESO here. The second object in our mosaic is the large open star cluster NGC 2546. It contains about 40 stars, is assigned to class III 2 according to Trumpler and is about 3,000 light years away from the solar system.
