GN 08.57.8 - H-II emission in the constellation Vela
GN 08.57.8 - Unser Bild zeigt die Sternentstehungsregion GN 08.57.8, auch als RCW 36 und GUM 20 katalogisiert. Es ist ein Emissionsnebel, in deren Zentrum ein offener Sternhaufen steht. Er ist Teil eines größeren Sternentstehungskomplexes, der als Vela Molecular Ridge bekannt ist. Er ist ein Ort massereicher Sternentwicklung - der mit einer Entfernung von nur 2.300 Lichtjahren - dem Sonnensystem sehr nahe liegt. Es sind im Zentrum des Sternhaufens 2 massive Sterne der Spektralklasse O und B die für die Ionisierung des Wasserstoffgases verantwortlich sind. Der Sternhaufen enthält mehrere hundert Sterne, die jedoch nur im infraroten Spektralbereich sichtbar sind. Object description
GN 08.57.8 - Our image shows the star forming region GN 08.57.8, also cataloged as RCW 36 and GUM 20. It is an emission nebula with an open star cluster at its center. It is part of a larger star-forming complex known as the Vela Molecular Ridge. It is a site of massive stellar evolution - which at a distance of only 2,300 light-years - is very close to the solar system. There are 2 massive stars of spectral class O and B in the center of the cluster which are responsible for the ionization of the hydrogen gas. The cluster contains several hundred stars, but they are visible only in the infrared spectral range. A detailed description of the region can be found here and an overview of the ESO here.
