RCW 27 - Star formation in the constellation Vela
RCW 27 (GUM 14) - Unser Bild zeigt eine Weitwinkelansicht der Sternentstehungsregion RCW 27 im Sternbild Vela (Segel des Schiffs). Es ist eine H-II Region, durchzogen von Dunkelnebeln. Im Innern steht der große offene Sternhaufen Ruprecht 64. Mit einem scheinbaren Durchmesser von nahezu 1 Grad erscheint er in doppelter Vollmondgröße. Weitgehend verantwortlich für die Ionisierung des Wasserstoffs ist der blaue Stern HD 74 067 vom Spektraltyp O. Mit NGC 2626 enthält RCW 27 auch einen kleinen Reflexionsnebel.
Der RCW-Katalog wurde 1960 von Alex Rodgers, Colin Campbell und John Whiteoak unter der Leitung von Bart Bok veröffentlicht. Er enthält 180 Objekte, viele davon H-II Regionen, die teilweise auch mit Objekten des GUM Kataloges identisch sind. Der komplette RCW Katalog ist hier zu finden.
Object description
RCW 27 (GUM 14) - Our image shows a wide angle view of the star forming region RCW 27 in the constellation Vela (Sail of the Ship). It is an H-II region, riddled with dark nebulae. Inside is the large open star cluster Ruprecht 64. With an apparent diameter of nearly 1 degree it appears twice the size of the full moon. Largely responsible for the ionization of the hydrogen is the blue star HD 74 067 of spectral type O. With NGC 2626 RCW 27 also contains a small reflection nebula.
