Herschel's Keyhole Nebula and the Star Eta Carina
Herschels Schlüsselloch Nebel und der Stern Eta Carina
Direkt neben Eta Carinae steht "Herschels Schlüssellochnebel" . Sein optischer Anblick ist mit den Helligkeitsvariationen von Eta Carinae eng verknüpft. Das Schlüsselloch besteht teilweise aus Dunkelwolken, die den Blick auf dahinterliegende Regionen verdecken. Die dunkle halbkreisförmige obere Struktur scheint eher eine Aushöhlung in der Dunkelwolke zu sein. Diese Aushöhlung scheint sich auszudehnen und hat einen eigenen Namen, der Eta Carinae-II-Ring.
Herschel sah 1843 noch helle Nebelpartien im südlichen Teil des Nebels, welche heute vollständig verschwunden sind. Heute interpretiert man sie als Reflexionsnebel, die damals noch durch Eta Carina direkt beleuchtet wurden. Herschel's Keyhole Nebula and the Star Eta Carina
Right next to Eta Carinae is "Herschel's Key Nebula" . Its optical view is closely related to the brightness variations of Eta Carinae. The keyhole consists partly of dark clouds, which obscure the view of regions behind. The dark semicircular upper structure appears to be more of a cavity in the dark cloud. This cavity appears to be expanding and has its own name, the Eta Carinae-II ring. In 1843
Herschel still saw bright nebular parts in the southern part of the nebula, which today have completely disappeared. Today they are interpreted as reflection nebulae, which at that time were still directly illuminated by Eta Carina.
