NGC 2438 - a small planetary nebula in the constellation of Puppis
NGC 2438 ist ein kleiner planetarischer Nebel im Sternbild Canis Major. Er bildet zusammen mit dem offenen Sternhaufen Messier 46 ein spektakuläres Beobachtungsobjekt am europäischen Winterhimmel.
Lange wurde vermutet, dass beide Objekte in gleicher Entfernung zum Sonnensystem stehen, somit NGC 2438 ein Teil des Sternhaufens ist. Neue Gaia Daten zeigen jedoch, dass der planetarische Nebel mit einer Entfernung von etwa 2.900 Lichtjahren dem Sonnensystem deutlich näher steht als M46, der etwa 5.400 Lichtjahre entfernt ist.
Der Zentralstern ist der Überrest eines Sterns von rund 4 Sonnenmassen. Der weiße Zwerg im Zentrum des Nebels hat eine scheinbare Helligkeit von 17.7 Mag. NGC 2438 wurde am 19. März 1786 vom deutsch-britischen Astronomen William Herschel entdeckt.
Object description
NGC 2438 is a small planetary nebula in the constellation Canis Major. Together with the open star cluster Messier 46 it forms a spectacular observing object in the European winter sky.
For a long time it was assumed that both objects are at the same distance from the solar system, thus NGC 2438 is a part of the star cluster. However, new Gaia data show that the planetary nebula, at a distance of about 2,900 light-years, is much closer to the solar system than M46, which is about 5,400 light-years away.
The central star is the remnant of a star of about 4 solar masses. The white dwarf in the center of the nebula has an apparent magnitude of 17.7 mag. NGC 2438 was discovered on March 19, 1786 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel. .
