NGC 2170 - H-II and Reflection Nebula in the constellation Unicorn (Monoceros)
NGC 2170 (vdb 69) ist ein großer Komplex aus Emissions- und Reflexionsnebeln im Sternbild Einhorn (Monoceros). Es handelt dabei um ein Teilgebiert der aktiven Sternentstehungsregion Monoceros R2, die in eine riesige Dunkelwolke aus Molekülen und Staubteilchen eingebettet ist. In der linken Bildhälfte heben sich die Reflexionsnebel NGC 2182, NGC 2183 und NGC 2185 vor der bräunlichen Molekülwolke ab. Die Entfernung zum Sonnensystem liegt bei etwa 2.700 Lichtjahren. Die helleren Teile (NGC 2170) wurden am 16. Oktober 1784 von William Herschel entdeckt.

Object description
NGC 2170 (vdb 69) is a large complex of emission and reflection nebulae in the constellation Unicorn (Monoceros). It is a sub-region of the active star-forming region Monoceros R2, embedded in a huge dark cloud of molecules and dust particles.
In the left half of the image, the reflection nebulae NGC 2182, NGC 2183, and NGC 2185 stand out against the brownish molecular cloud. The distance to the solar system is about 2,700 light years. The brighter parts (NGC 2170) were discovered by William Herschel on October 16, 1784.
