Objektbeschreibung:

NGC 2261 und NGC 2264 Etwa 1.3 südwestlich von NGC 2264 ist NGC 2261 (im Bild rechts unten) zu finden. Die kleinere neblige Region in Form eines Kometen wird oft auch als "Hubbles variabler Nebel" genannt. Es ist ein Reflexionsnebel an dessen Spitze der junge Riesenstern R Monocerotis (R Mon, Spektraltyp B0) steht, der aber selbst nicht sichtbar ist. R Mon ist ein Doppelsternsystem, das irregulär seine Helligkeit ändert. Durch die Helligkeitsvariationen und dichte Staubwolken in der Umgebung von R Mon ändert auch der Reflexionsnebel Form und Helligkeit. NGC 2261 wurde übrigens als "first light" des Hale-Teleskops von Edwin Hubble am 26. Januar 1949 fotografiert. Entdeckt wurde das Objekt am 26. Dezember 1783 von Wilhelm Herschel. Unser Bild ist ein Mosaik aus NGC 2264 und NGC 2261, bestehend aus 2 Segmenten.

Object description

NGC 2261 und NGC 2264. About 1.3 southwest is NGC 2261. This smaller nebulous region in the shape of a comet is often called "Hubble's variable nebula". It is a reflection nebula at the top of which is the young giant star R Monocerotis (R Mon, spectral type B0), but it is not visible itself. R Mon is a binary star system which changes its brightness irregularly. Due to brightness variations and dense dust clouds in the vicinity of R Mon, the reflection nebula also changes shape and brightness. By the way, NGC 2261 was photographed as "first light" of the Hale telescope by Edwin Hubble on January 26, 1949. The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on December 26, 1783. Our image is a mosaic of NGC 2264 and NGC 2261, consisting of 2 segments.
