GN 08.57.5 - H-II emission and dark clouds in the constellation Vela
GN 08.57.5 (RCW 38) GN 08.57.5 ist ein Sternentstehungsgebiet im Sternbild Vela, dessen hellster, zentraler Teil als RCW 38 katalogisiert ist und einen sehr jungen offenen Sternhaufen enthält. Die Region, die hier im Bild gezeigt wird, liegt etwa 5.500 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt und ist somit KEIN Teil des großen Vela Supernova Überrests, der nur etwa 3.000 Lichtjahre entfernt ist.
Die äußeren H-II Regionen, die um RCW 38 herum liegen, sind Gum 22, Gum 23 und Gum 24. Einige weitergehende Informationen zu RCW 38 der ESO sind hier zu finden.
Object description
GN 08.57.5 (RCW 38) GN 08.57.5 is a star-forming region in the constellation Vela, whose brightest, central part is cataloged as RCW 38 and contains a very young open star cluster. The region shown here in the image is about 5,500 light-years from the solar system and thus is NOT part of the large Vela supernova remnant, which is only about 3,000 light-years away.
The outer H-II regions that lie around RCW 38 are Gum 22, Gum 23, and Gum 24. Some more detailed information about RCW 38 from ESO can be found here. .
