NGC 5128 - der Zentralbereich von Centaurus A
NGC 5128 - the central region of Centaurus A

Objektbeschreibung:

Object description

Centaurus A (NGC 5128) is one of the most extraordinary galaxies in the southern sky, both in view and in its diverse structures. At a distance of "only" 11 million light years, it is very close to the solar system and is therefore one of the best studied galaxies outside the local group. Together with Messier 83, Centaurus A forms the centre of a nearby group of galaxies outside the local group.

It is the closest radio galaxy to our Milky Way and the third brightest radio source in the sky. There is still disagreement among astronomers about its morphological type, with some researchers classifying it as an elliptical type E(p) galaxy and others as a lenticular type S0 galaxy. Its characteristic optical feature is the clearly visible "bent" dust band that crosses the galaxy.

In this image of NGC 5128, special focus was placed on the central area in the image processing. The outer areas are less relevant here. You can see another photo with a detailed object descriptiong by us, which show the outer areas more clearly here.
