NGC 2736 - Der Bleistiftnebel im Sternbild Segel des Schiffs NGC 2736 - The Pencil Nebula in the Constellation Sail of the Ship

Objektbeschreibung: NGC 2736, der Bleistiftnebel - manchmal auch Herschels Bleistiftnebel genannt - ist ein sehr kleiner Teil eines riesigen Supernovaüberrestes im Sternbild Segel (lat. Vela). Die gegenwärtig 650.000 Kilometer pro Stunde schnelle Schockfront des vor 11.000 Jahren explodierten Sterns trifft an dieser Stelle auf dichteres interstellares Gas und regt es zum Leuchten an. Diese Supernovaexplosion hinterließ als Rest einen Pulsar (den Vela Pulsar), der erst im Jahr 1968 entdeckt und später auch optisch identifiziert wurde. Seine Entfernung zum Sonnensystem beträgt exakt 287 Parsec, das entspricht 936 Lichtjahre, seine Rotationsperiode beträgt 89 Millisekunden. Das Objekt wurde am 1. Object description NGC 2736, the Pencil Nebula - sometimes called Herschel's Pencil Nebula - is a very small part of a giant supernova remnant in the constellation Sail (lat. Vela). The currently 650,000 kilometers per hour fast shock front of the star, which exploded 11,000 years ago, hits denser interstellar gas at this location and excites it to glow. This stellar explosion left a pulsar (Vela Pulsar), which was discovered in 1968 and later identified optically. Its distance to the solar system is exactly 287 parsecs, which corresponds to 936 light-years, and its rotation period is 89 milliseconds.
