IC 2220 - A reflection nebula in the constellation Carina
Unser Bild zeigt detailliert den Reflexionsnebel IC 2220. Er ist einer der selten vorkommenden gelblichen Reflexionsnebel in unserer Galaxie. Der zentrale rote Riesenstern HD 65 750 (ca. 5-fache Sonnenmasse) ist mit einem Alter von nur 50 Millionen Jahren vergleichsweise jung. Er befindet aber in einem deutlich fortgeschrittenen Stadium seines Lebens und verliert ständig Gas und Staubmassen, die sich abkühlen und vom Licht des Sternes angestrahlt werden. Das Licht wird dabei hauptsächlich an Staubteilchen aus Quarz reflektiert.
HD 65 750 liegt in einer Entfernung von etwa 1150 Lichtjahren zum Sonnensystem und daraus ergibt sich ein wahrer Durchmesser von ungefähr einem Lichtjahr. Ausführliche Informationen zu diesem Objekt gibt es bei der ESO. Entdeckt wurde IC 2220 am 30. März 1900 von DeLisle Stewart, einem US amerikanischen Astronomen.
Das Aussehen des Nebels erinnert (weitläufig) an einen traditionellen britischen Bierkrug, auch als Toby-Jug bezeichnet, so dass IC 2220 auch den populären Namen Toby-Jug-Nebel trägt. Mehr dazu hier ...
Object description
Our image shows in detail the reflection nebula IC 2220. It is one of the rarely found yellowish reflection nebulae in our galaxy. The central red giant star HD 65 750 (approximately 5 times the mass of the sun) is relatively young with an age of only 50 million years. However, it is in a clearly advanced phase of its life and is constantly losing gas and dust masses, which cool down and are illuminated by the light of the star. The light is reflected mainly by dust particles of quartz.

HD 65 750 lies at a distance of about 1200 light-years from the
solar system and this gives a true diameter of about one light-year.

at ESO. IC 2220 was discovered on March 30, 1900 by DeLisle Stewart, a US
astronomer. The appearance of the nebula is (rough) reminding of a traditional British beer mug, also called Toby-Jug, so IC 2220 has also the popular name Toby-Jug Nebula.
