The Taurus Littrwo Region - landing site of Apollo 17, the last manned lunar landing mission of NASA

back to special presentations

The picture shows the surroundings of the landing site of Apollo 17. Interesting structures are labeled in the picture.

Diagonal - from bottom left to top right - the border between the two large moon mares Serenitatis and Tranquilitatis is visible.
Dominant is the large crater Plinius with a diameter of 41 kilometers and its impressive system of grooves - the Rimae Plinius. East of Plinius (right) lies a volcanic region with the Jansen crater and the associated sinusoidal groove Rima Jansen.

Nearby are several craters flooded with lava. On the right side of the picture is the Gardner Megadome, one of the largest volcanic plateaus on the moon.

The ones in red writing with A to D are names that have defined the Apollo 17 crew. Here are some sizes:

C: Bear Mountain = 3,400 meter and crater MOCR = 1,200 meter
D: Family Mountain = 3,400 meter,the crater Ching Te (green 2) has a diameter of about 3,700 meter Durchmesser.

West of Ching Te is the small crater Stella with a diameter of only 400 meters (bright structure to the left of the 2). It is a very young crater with a small but extremely bright radiation system, which is shown in the picture as a bright spot.

The smallest - clearly visible - structures in the image are the two so-called lunar cones Osisris and Isis.
Osiris = 950 meters and Isis = 600 meters
