Alpha and Beta Centaurus and the constellation Southern Cross
Das Kreuz des Südens ist eines der bekanntesten Sternbilder am südlichen Himmel. Neben seiner markanten Form kann es zum Aufinden der Südrichtung benutzt werden. Dazu verlängert man die Strecke von Gacrux nach Acrux (siehe beschriftetes Bild) etwa 4.5-mal und fällt von dieser Stelle am Himmel (in der kein heller Stern steht) ein Lot zum Horizont.
Die beiden Zeigersterne alpha und beta Centauri weisen am Himmel direkt auf das Kreuz des Südens. Mit diesen beiden Sternen kann es auch nicht mit dem falschen Kreuz verwechselt werden. Gleichzeitig hat man mit alpha Centauri auch unser Nachbarsonnensystem in einer Entfernung von nur 4,3 Lichtjahren im Blick.

description: The Southern Cross is one of the best known constellations in the southern sky. Besides its distinctive shape, it can be used to find the southern direction. To do this, extend the distance from Gacrux to Acrux (see labelled image) about 4.5 times and drop a perpendicular from this point in the sky (where there is no bright star) to the horizon. The two pointer stars alpha and beta Centauri point directly to the Southern Cross in the sky. With these two stars, it cannot be confused with the false cross either.
