Trumler 14, 15, 16 und Collinder 232 - unser Bild zeigt das Herz des großen Carina Nebels (NGC 3372) in einem 2-er Mosaik. Es zeigt den instabilen Stern Eta Carina, den nach William Herschel benannten "Schlüssellochnebel" und die großen zentralen offenen Sternhaufen Trumpler 14, 15, 16 und Collinder.

Die
Sterne dieser Sternhaufen (und weiterer, z.B. Van den Bergh Hagen 99)
ionisieren das die Sterne umgebende Gas und lassen es im roten Licht der
Wasserstofflinie aufleuchten. NGC 3372 ist mit einer Ausdehnung von etwa 300
Lichtjahren die größte Sternentstehungsregion der Milchstraße
und liegt um die 8.000 bis 9.000 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt. Object description Trumler 14, 15, 16 und Collinder 232 - Our image shows the heart of the Great Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) in a two-panel mosaic. It features the unstable star Eta Carina, the “Keyhole Nebula” (named after William Herschel), and the large central open star clusters Trumpler 14, 15, 16, and Collinder. The stars in these clusters (and others, such as Van den Bergh Hagen 99) ionize the gas surrounding them, causing it to glow in the red light of the hydrogen line.
