NGC 6231 and IC 4628 - Star formation in the constellation of Scorpio
Sternentstehung im Skorpion - Unser Bild zeigt eine weitwinkliges Ansicht von Sternentstehung im Sternbild Skorpion. In der oberen Bildmitte steht IC 4628 in dem mehrere junge offene Sternhaufen stehen. Der Sterne des hellen offenen Sternhaufen NGC 6231 ionisieren das umgebene Wasserstoffgas und bringen es zum Leuchten. Der Sternhaufen ist das Zentrum der Sco OB1 Assoziation. Am rechten Bildrand steht die kometare Globule DCld 343.0+2.8, der so genannte "dark tower " ist eine aktive Sternentstehungsregion im Sternbild Skorpion.

description Star formation in Scorpio - Our image shows a wide-angle view of star formation in the constellation Scorpio. In the upper center of the image is high res. IC 4628, which contains several young open clusters. The stars of the bright open cluster high res. NGC 6231 ionize the surrounding hydrogen gas and make it glow. The cluster is the center of the Sco OB1 association. At the right edge of the image is the cometary globule high res.
