Melotte 111 - the Coma Berenice Cluster
Melotte 111- Unser Bild zeigt ein Mosaik, bestehend aus 4 Segmenten, des großen offenen Sternhaufen Melotte 111, auch Coma-Sternhaufen oder Coma Cluster genannt. Es ist eine lockere Ansammlung von etwa 40 Sternen in einer Entfernung von etwa 260 Lichtjahren. Das Bild wurde für eines unserer speziellen Projekte aufgenommen, "Eine Reise durch Raum und Zeit".
Blickt man in Richtung Melotte 111, so blickt man in Richtung des galaktischen Nordpols unserer Milchstraße. Da in dieser Blickrichtung so gut wie keine Gas- und Staubwolken der die Sicht behindern, sind dort viele weit entfernte Galaxien sichtbar.
Object description
Melotte 111- Our image shows a mosaic, consisting of 4 segments, of the large open star cluster Melotte 111, also called Coma star cluster or Coma Cluster. It is a loose collection of about 40 stars at a distance of about 260 light years. The image was taken for one of our special projects, "A Journey through Space and Time".
If you look in the direction of Melotte 111, you are looking in the direction of the galactic north pole of our Milky Way. Since there are almost no gas and dust clouds in this direction, many distant galaxies are visible there.
