IC 2581 - an open star cluster in the constellation Carina
IC 2581 (Collinder 220) ist ein junger und heller offener Sternhaufen, östlich von RCW 49 gelegen. Er ist nach Trumpler als Typ I 3 m klassifiziert und umfasst etwa 120 Sterne heller der 15. Größenklasse. Der hellste Stern ist HD 90772, ein blauer Riesenstern der Spektralklasse A7. Die Entfernung zum Sonnensystem liegt bei etwa 8.000 Lichtjahren. Obwohl der Sternhaufen bereits mit dem bloßen Auge sichtbar ist, wurde er relativ spät erst am 10. Mai 1893 von Edward Pickering entdeckt.
Object description
IC 2581 (Collinder 220) is a young and bright open star cluster, located east of RCW 49. It is classified as type I 3 m by Trumpler and contains about 120 stars brighter of the 15th magnitude class. The brightest star is HD 90772, a blue giant star of spectral class A7. The distance to the solar system is about 8,000 light-years. Although the cluster is already visible to the naked eye, it was discovered relatively late by Edward Pickering on May 10, 1893.
