NGC 2264 - the "Christmas Tree Star Cluster" in the constellation Unicorn (Monoceros)
NGC 2264 - unser Bild zeigt eine hoch aufgelöste Ansicht des offene Sternhaufen NGC 2264 - dem so genannten Weihnachtsbaum Sternhaufen (Cristmas Tree Cluster). Seine Entfernung zum Sonnensystem beträgt etwa 2.500 Lichtjahre und wird nach Trumpler der Klasse III 3 m n zugeordnet. Er beinhaltet etwa 40 helle Sterne, von denen ungefähr ein Dutzend der Spektralklasse O mit ihrer starken UV-Strahlung die umgebenden Wolken ionisiert und sie auf lang belichteten Bildern rot aufleuchten lässt.
Der hellste Stern im Bild ist S Monocerotis. Es ist ein Mehrfachsternsystem und der Hauptstern unregelmäßig veränderlich. Ausführliche Informationen zu S Monocerotis sind hier zu finden
Object description
NGC 2264 - our image shows a high resolution view of the open star cluster NGC 2264 - the so called Cristmas Tree Cluster. Its distance to the solar system is about 2,500 light-years and is classified as class III 3 m n according to Trumpler. It contains about 40 bright stars, of which about a dozen of spectral class O ionize the surrounding clouds with their strong UV radiation and make them glow red on long-exposure images.
The brightest star in the image is S Monocerotis. It is a multiple star system and the main star is irregularly variable. Detailed information about S Monocerotis can be found here.
