NGC 2808 - A globular cluster in the constellation of Carina
NGC 2808 ist ein großer, heller aber wenig bekannter Kugelsternhaufen im Sternbild Carina. Von den etwa 150 bekannten Kugelsternhaufen in unserem Milchstraßensystem ist er einer der massereichsten und enthält mehr als 1 Million Sterne. Seine Entfernung zum Sonnensystem liegt nur bei etwa 30.000 Lichtjahren. Nach Untersuchungen mit dem Weltraumteleskop Hubble ergab, dass sich zusammen alle Sterne in einer Zeit von nur 200 Millionen Jahre gebildet haben. Das Alter der Sterne wird auf etwa 12.5 Milliarden Jahre geschätzt.
Mit der Entdeckung der Canis Major Zwerggalaxie im Jahre 2003 kamen Zweifel auf, ob NGC 2808 in unserer Milchstraße entstanden ist. Zusammen mit den Kugelsternhaufen Messier 79 und NGC 1851 könnten diese 3 Kugelsternhaufen auch Rest von Zwerggalaxien sein, die vor langer Zeit mit der Milchstraße kollidierten. NGC 2808 am 7. Mai 1826 vom schottischen Astronomen James Dunlop entdeckt.
Object description
NGC 2808 is a large, bright but little known globular cluster in the constellation Carina. Of the approximately 150 known globular clusters in our Milky Way system, it is one of the most massive and contains more than 1 million stars. Its distance to the solar system is only about 30,000 light years. Investigations with the Hubble Space Telescope showed that together all stars formed in a time of only 200 million years. The age of the stars is estimated at about 12.5 billion years.
With the discovery of the Canis Major dwarf galaxy in 2003, doubts arose as to whether NGC 2808 formed in our Milky Way. Together with the globular clusters Messier 79 and NGC 1851, these 3 globular clusters could also be remnants of dwarf galaxies that collided with the Milky Way a long time ago. NGC 2808 discovered on May 7, 1826 by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop .
