NGC 2419 - A globular cluster in the constellation of Lynx
NGC 2419 ist ein Kugelsternhaufen im Sternbild Luchs (Lynx), der oft auch als der "Intergalaktischer Wanderer" bezeichnet wird. Er hat eine Entfernung zum Sonnensystem von ungefähr 275.000 Lichtjahren und benötigt etwa 3 Milliarden Jahre für einen kompletten Umlauf um unsere Milchstraße. Erst spät wurde er trotz dieser großen Entfernung als zur Milchstraße gehörig erkannt an die er gravitativ gebunden ist. Auf Grund seiner scheinbaren Größe am Himmel und seiner Entfernung ergibt sich ein wahrer Durchmesser von etwa 250 Lichtjahren.
Inzwischen wurden mit C 0422?213, AM-1, Palomar 3, Palomar 4 und Palomar 14 weitere an die Milchstraße gebundene Kugelsternhaufen gefunden, die noch weiter entfernt sind als NGC 2419. Der Kugelsternhaufen wurde von William Herschel am 31. Dezember 1788 entdeckt, der ihn als "runder Fleck" beschrieben hat.
Die Galaxie links oben im Bild ist NGC 2424. Sie wird nach Hubble als Balkenspirale des Typs SBb klassifiziert und ist 150 Millionen Lichtjahre von unserer Milchstraße entfernt.
Object description
NGC 2419 NGC 2419, is a globular cluster in the constellation Lynx, often called the "Intergalactic Wanderer". It has a distance to the solar system of about 275,000 light years and needs about 3 billion years for a complete orbit around our Milky Way. Only late it was recognized as belonging to the Milky Way to which it is gravitationally bound. Based on its apparent size in the sky and its distance, its true diameter is about 250 light years.
In the meantime, with C 0422-213, AM-1, Palomar 3, Palomar 4 and Palomar 14, other globular clusters bound to the Milky Way have been found, which are even more distant than NGC 2419. The globular cluster was discovered by William Herschel on December 31, 1788, who described it as a "round spot".
Thegalaxy in the upper left of the image is NGC 2424. It is classified by Hubble as a barred spiraltype SBb and is 150 million light-years away from our Milky Way.Milky Way.
