IC 2391 - The Omicron Velorum open star cluster in the constellation Vela
IC 2391 2391 - auch als Omicron Velorum Cluster bezeichnet, ist ein galaktischer heller offener Sternhaufen im Sternbild Vela. Der Sternenhaufen ist etwa 500 Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt und wird nach Trumler der Klasse II 3 p zugeordnet und beinhaltet um die 30 Sterne. Sein scheinbarer Winkeldurchmesser beträgt etwa 1 Grad, über die Entfernung ergibt sich ein wahrer Durchmesser von 10 Lichtjahren.
Auf Grund seiner großen Helligkeit wurde IC 2391 vermutlich um das Jahr 964 von dem persischen Astronomen Abd ar-Rahman as-Sufi erstmals erwähnt. Die Aufnahme in astronomische Kataloge geht wohl Nicolas Louis de Lacaille zurück, der den Sternhaufen im Jahre 1751 als Lac II 5 katalogisiert hat.
Object description
IC 2391 - also called as Omicron Velorum Cluster, is a galactic bright open star cluster in the constellation Vela. The cluster is about 500 light-years away from Earth and is assigned to class II 3 p according to Trumler and contains about 30 stars. Its apparent angular diameter is about 1 degree, over the distance a true diameter of 10 light-years results.
Due to its high brightness IC 2391 was probably first mentioned around the year 964 by the Persian astronomer Abd ar-Rahman as-Sufi. The inclusion in astronomical catalogs probably goes back to Nicolas Louis de Lacaille, who cataloged the star cluster in 1751 as Lac II 5.
