Objektbeschreibung:

NGC 2516 ist ein offener Sternhaufen im Sternbild Carina (Kiel des Schiffs). Sein scheinbarer Durchmesser am Himmel beträgt ungefähr 30 Bogenminuten, das entspricht etwa der Größe des Vollmondes mit dem bloßen Auge betrachtet. NGC 2516 ist bietet bei niedrigen Vergrößerungen visuell einen atemberaubenden Anblick im Teleskop, ähnlich Herschels Schmuckkästchen NGC 4755.

Er beinhaltet etwa 80 bis 100 Sterne wovon die hellsten im Kernbereich Rote Riesensterne der 5. Größenklasse sind. Diese roten Riesen stehen am Ende ihres Lebens, obwohl das Gesamtalter des Sternhaufens nur auf 135 Millionen Jahre geschätzt wird. Die restlichen Sterne haben Helligkeiten der 7. Größenklasse und schwächer.

NGC 2516 wird nach Trumpler als Typ I 3 r klassifiziert. Seine Entfernung zum Sonnensystem beträgt ungefähr 1300 Lichtjahre, bei einem scheinbaren Durchmesser von 30 Bogenminuten entspricht dies real etwa 12 Lichtjahre. Entdeckt wurde NGC 2516 im Jahr 1751 von dem französischen Astronomen Nicolas Louis de Lacaille.

Object description:

NGC 2516 is an open star cluster in the constellation Carina (Keel of the Ship). Its apparent diameter in the sky is about 30 arc minutes, which is about the size of the full moon as seen with the naked eye. NGC 2516 is visually stunning in the telescope at low magnifications, similar to Herschel's jewel box NGC 4755.

It contains about 80 to 100 stars, of which the brightest in the core are red giant stars of the 5th magnitude class. These red giants are at the end of their lives, although the total age of the cluster is estimated at only 135 million years. The remaining stars have magnitudes of 7th magnitude and fainter.

NGC 2516 is classified as type I 3 r according to Trumpler. Its distance to the solar system is about 1300 light-years, with an apparent diameter of 30 arcminutes this corresponds to about 12 light-years in real terms. NGC 2516 was discovered by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1751.
