Please note: Some of the images - taken at a moon age between 3.3 and 3.7 days - don't reach the normal high quality of the atlas. This is caused by the short angular distance between Sun and Moon and the low elevations of the moon. We include it in the atlas because they are rare images which also show some very interesting structures of the Moon. Such images only in near infrared successful. We used a Baader IR pass filter, which opens at a wavelength of 685 nanometers. All video files were taken about 1 hour before sunset and are completely from the year 2016.

Interesting image details

Image 0003 - shows Mare Crisium at sunrise. Image quality is not so good but one can see the complete mare ridge system in Crisium

Image 0001 - shows the crater Furnerius at the southeaster limb. Some more structures are visible; Rimae Hase, Vallis Snellius and a short nameless crater chain (all labelled in the image). Rimae Hase may be an extension of the large rille in the crater Petavius, see also theLRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter) image in an äquidistant projektion with a image resolution of 125m/pxl.

Image 0005 B - shows the Mare Marginis with the Marginis Swirl (marked in the image), one of the few of these "mysterious" patterns on the front of the moon..

LRO image of the Marginis Swirl at a resolution of 125m/pxl ( Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter)

Detailed descriptions of other exceptional or unique structures at this moon age you can find in this pdf-file

« Special Images - Moon age 3.3 days, Illumination 12.3 %

The left picture shows the crater Petavius at sunrise. To the east is the big floor fractured crater Humboldt. The libration were nearly optimal. So the picture shows the system of rilles and large lava flows in crater Humboldt.
