Object description:

The open star cluster and emission nebula IC 2944/2948 are located southeast of the bright star lambda Centauri (at the upper edge of the picture). The nebula is about 6500 light years away from the Earth and has a diameter of 40 arcminutes in the sky. This results in a real diameter of about 75 light years. The well-known Thackerey globules can be seen in the inner part of the nebula. An image of them with longer focal length was captured at Rooisand observatory. There you will find also more information about these Thackerey globules
