The cometary globule Dcld 343+2.8 - "the black tower" in the constellation Scorpion

Object description:

The cometary globule Dcld 343+2.8

The dark cloud known as the "Dark Tower" associated with the cometary globule DCld 343.0+2.8 in the constellation Scorpius is located in the western part of the emission nebula Gum 55. The head of the globule points towards the open star cluster NGC 6231, which is located at the lower left outside the image field and is the center of the Scorpius OB1 association. Numerous young and hot stars of the association ionize the front part of the molecular cloud and produce the red emission nebula rim. In addition to the emission region, five small reflection nebulae are visible within the globule. The distance is about 5300 light-years.

A wide field view of Dcld 343+2.8 is shown here. An image of the open star cluster NGC 6231, the center of the Scorpius OB1 association here. And an overview mosaic of the complete OB1 association here.
