  • July 2013 - Saturn and Cassini
In the night of Juli 19th/20th - between 21:27 and 21:42 UT - the wide angle camera of the spacecraft Cassini took a mosaic (33 segments, 323 single frames in different spectral bands) of the rings of Saturn backlit by the sun.

NASA used this mosaic as part of a small PR campaign, because every person on Earth for whom Saturn was visible during the time of the recording is part of the picture, even though the size of the Earth in the mosaic is only a fraction of pixels.

The terrestrial image of Saturn was taken at the same time using the Celestron C 14 of Onjala Lodge. The primary focus of 4.000 mm focal length was extended by a factor of 1.3 resulting in 5.200 mm using a Baader Q-Turret Barlowlens. This means, that Cassini is part of our picture, even though the size is only some hundred-thousandth pixel.
