Siding Spring passes Mars at closest approach
 

 
Description of object:

C/2013A1 (Siding Spring) was discovered on 3 January 2013 by Robert H. McNaught at Siding Spring Observatory. It passed Mars very closely on 19 October 2014, 18:28 UTC, in a distance of about 139.000 km. We could take a photograph of this unique event just one hour after the closest approach. The angular distance between Mars and the comet was about 2.5 arcminutes.
