NGC 6124 - an open star cluster in the constellation Scorpio - embedded in H-II emission nebula and dark clouds
 

 
Object description:

NGC 6124 is an open star cluster in the constellation Scorpio. With an apparent diameter of 40 arcminutes it is cataloged as type II 3 m according to Trumpler. NGC 6124 contains about 100 stars and stands at a distance of about 1700 light years from the solar system. The cluster was discovered by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1751.
 
On the left edge of the image is a small planetary nebula - NGC 6153 - which appears "stellar" with a diameter of only 0.4 arc minutes.
