Object description:

NGC 4349lies just under 1.3 degrees north of Acrux in the Southern Cross constellation in the middle of a very starry region of the Milky Way. It is an open star cluster with an apparent diameter of just under 5 arcminutes. At a distance of about 7000 light-years this corresponds to a diameter of 65 light-years.

The cluster is classified as type I 2 m according to Trumpler. It contains nearly 400 stars, whose age is estimated to 250 million years. NGC 4349 was discovered by James Dunlop on April 30, 1826.
