Object description
The central region of the large Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) with the open star clusters Trumpler 14, 15, 16 and Collinder 232

Short objekt description:

Our image shows in a mosaic of 2 the four large, bright star clusters in the central region of the Carina Nebula NGC 3372. They are Trumpler 14, 15, 16 (with the star Eta Carina) and Collinder 232. This also includes Collinder 228, south of Eta Carina, whose image we show here.

The raw sum images were only exposed briefly for this image in order to prevent overexposure of the bright stars of the star clusters. In addition, this also avoided overexposure of the bright nebulae in which the star clusters are embedded.

These star clusters are very young, the stars probably only between 500,000 (Trumpler 14) and 10 million years old (Trumpler 16). Their distances to the solar system vary only slightly between 8,000 (Trumpler 14) and 9,500 light years (Trumpler 16).

The nebular masses of the Carina Nebula extend altogether in space depth at distances between 6,500 and 10,000 light-years with a diameter of 200 to 300 light-years.

A complete overview of the Carinane Nebula in a mosaic representation is shown here.
